INDIANAPOLIS 500

Went to the Indianapolis speedway during DCI Champiosnhips week. That was pretty impressive! The 2,5 mile long track hosts the Indy 500 and Allstate 400 races. The track is better known as the brickyard.
The race track is the world's oldest (1909!!) continuously operated race course and the site of the largest one-day sports event anywhere.

We got a tour actually ON the track!! In a van though. We didn’t get to drive ourselves. Normally the race cars take the turns at a speed somewhere between 170 and 240 miles an hour (depending on the type of cars of course).
The museum has a lot of original cars that used to race there. Some of them go all the way back to 1932! Lots of old trophies and memorabilia too! Bought a few T-shirts and a history booklet.
This excursion made me think of my dad taking me to the Zandvoort Formula 1 race way back in the late 70s. Mario Andretti and Niki Lauda were among my favourites back then.
This Indianapolis track is unusually long! It hasn’t been used for Formula 1 races too often. The main thing here is the Indy 500 and the Allstate 400.
Next time here - DCI is going to be in Indianapolis for the next 10 years so I am sure there will be plenty of chances – I will take the full hour and a half $25 tour, in which you actually get to go out of the van, walk on the track, go into the executive suites, press room, control center, the pits area and a few other places the general public never gets to go to into. That should be fun. You even get to stand on the winner’s podium and have your picture taken.
For now,… a picture outside the museum will have to do… Oh,.. and one in a racecar in the museum!

Enjoy,

HK
